Champions were celebrated for their achievements and volunteers recognised for their commitment to motor sport at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving at Savvy on the Bay, Bridgetown, on Friday evening (March 14). Competitors from rallying, off-road events and autocross mixed with marshals and officials in a convivial gathering as trophies and keepsakes were presented.

In a short address, Chairman Neil Corbin thanked the Club’s corporate backers, led by BCIC and First Citizens, title sponsors respectively of Rally Barbados and King of the Hill, along with Government ministries which facilitate the sport. Noting the achievements of the award-winners, he also recognised the sacrifices and commitment of the volunteers “who make the whole thing work, both on-event and behind the scenes, with hours in the hot sun or pouring rain, and we had a lot of that last year. My thanks to you all.”

Stuart Maloney was recognised in his absence for his second Champion Driver, 4wd and FIA R5 titles – the trophies were accepted on his behalf by Jamaica’s Jeff Panton - while Rhett Watson won the 2wd Championship and the SuperModified 2 class. Group B Champion Chadane Holder was the Rookie of the Year, while Kayleigh Catwell, Emily Kinch and Natya Soodeen are rewarded in Female Co-Driver and Driver categories after a season in which a record number of 24 females started Rally Barbados.

Michelle King, the manager of Motorsport Services, which deals with entry and logistics issues on behalf of all island motorsport, received a standing ovation when she was presented with the Richard Roett Memorial Trophy for services to the sport.

Simon Parravicino and Andrew Croney were crowned Champion Driver and Navigator respectively in the Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship, while George Mendes and Leslie Evanson are Class B Champions. Evanson was also highest-placed Female Navigator, while Rebecca Clarke won the trophy for highest-placed Female Driver.

In Autocross, Stephen Nicholls also claimed a second Champion Driver title, while Callum Kirton was Junior Champion, David-Anthony Balgobin won the Motoring News Rookie title and Cheryl-Ann Hurley was Ladies Champion.
