Rally Club Championship to be settled on Sunday
Stuart Maloney and Kristian Yearwood lead the field of 43 cars entered for the final round of the 2024 Barbados Rally Club (BRC) Driver’s and Class Championships in the Skoda Fabia RS Rally2 in which they won BCIC Rally Barbados. With the now-customary enhanced points structure in place for Sunday’s (November 17) BRC Winter Rally and overall and class champions yet to be crowned, a hot day of competition is anticipated.
Seeded at one in the running order published at last evening’s (Thursday) Briefing Meeting at Savvy on the Bay, Carlisle Bay, Bridgetown, Maloney heads a 10-strong entry in the FIA R5 class, which promises a thrilling day for fans. Jamaicans Kyle Gregg and Michael Fennell Jnr are seeded at two in their Ford Fiesta Rally2, with Maloney’s brother Mark at three in his Fabia Rally2 evo, co-driven by son Justin.
Top two-wheel-drive seeds at 11 are Rhett Watson and Andrew Croney in their mighty SuperModified 2 BMW M3. Barry Mayers and Ben Norris start at 12 in their Ford Fiesta, back in action with a new engine after retiring from BCIC RB24, then Mark Kinch and Seth Prescod at 15 in another SM2 BMW. While not in contention for 2wd or SM2 titles, 2016 Champion Driver Daryl Clarke also returns after a DNF in BCIC RB24, eager for some more seat time in his Honda-powered Suzuki Swift RS, one of eight entries in SM2.
For the second time, 2021 Champion Driver Maloney reaches the final round with his closest challenger being Clubman 2 points leader Chris Hoad, who lost out in a tie-break three years ago. With 118 points, Maloney leads Hoad by five, with Watson third, another 18 adrift. With a dropped score rule in play this year, however, Watson closes in to within 10 points of Maloney, having missed the opening round.
As always, the season finale will benefit from an enhanced scoring system - 28 points for a win compared with 20, then 23 for second place, 20 for third and so on down to 10 for 10th place – so there is still much to be settled.
While Maloney also leads the 4wd Championship, brother Mark has a mathematical chance of overhauling him if he failed to finish, but there is a good fight to savour for third place between Britain’s Rob Swann and island driver Logan Watson, both driving Fabia Rally2 evos, who are separated by just three points after dropped scores.
Watson has already put the 2wd Championship out of reach of his rivals (SM2 as well, very nearly), a decade since he won the first of his two 2wd and Champion Driver titles. But the places are yet to be settled: after dropped scores, just 11 points cover Andrew Jones (SM2 Ford Escort MkII) and Barry Mayers, also Sol Esuf (Modified 3 BMW 1M) and two-time Champion Driver Neil Corbin (M2 Toyota GT86 CS-R3).
Although some class winners are home and dry, others remain to be resolved. Neil Corbin is one point behind Sean Corbin (BMW 318ti) in M2, while there’s just a five-point spread across the BMWs of Jonathan Still, Stuart Garcia and Sol Esuf in M3, with Garcia the only one needing to drop a score. In Clubman 1, Reigning Champion Kyle Gill (Mitsubishi Mirage RS Clone) has a six-point cushion over Wayne Tasker (Opel Corsa B).
C2 was a straight fight between the BimmaCups of Hoad and Allan Kinch, separated by 20 points after dropped scores, but Kinch was a late withdrawal. Any of three drivers could finish third, as five points covers Jason Downey, Natya Soodeen and Russell Smith. David-Anthony Balgobin and Savio Walcott are also in that bracket, but not entered.
The BRC Winter Rally comprises nine three-kilometre stages at two venues, starting from the central Service Park at Colleton Plantation in St John at 10.30am. In the morning, three stages from Malvern to Wilson Hill will alternate with two from Stewart’s Hill to Society; in the afternoon, which is scheduled to start after the lunch break at 2.00pm, the Stewart’s Hill stage will run twice in the same direction, alternating with a reversed Wilson Hill to Malvern. The organisers expect the event to finish at around 5.30pm, with a Prizegiving to follow.
