Rain puts the Mud back into MudDogs this Sunday

Ben Norris, Kirk Watkins and their Jeep Rubicon return to the Chefette MudDogs Championship on Sunday for the first time since March

Recent weather patterns delivering regular heavy rain have created perfect conditions to challenge the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) off-road 4x4 navigational fraternity in Sunday’s (September 15) Super S September Safari. After a three-month summer break, crews are making ready for the fourth of five rounds of the Chefette MudDogs Safari Championship, which will feature the return of the popular Driver Challenges for the first time this year.
Thirteen crews are listed on the running order published after Tuesday’s (September 10) Briefing Meeting at Savvy on the Bay, Carlisle Bay, Bridgetown, with two first-time entries pushing the numbers in Class B to eight, the highest in recent times. MudDogs Chairman Ricky Holder said: “It is always encouraging to see new names on the entry list and I hope they enjoy themselves; the more experienced crews will help them along the way, I’m sure. And my thanks to KG Enterprises for their sponsorship through the Super S lubricants brand.”
Current leader of the overall driver standings after three straight victories is multiple champion Leslie Alleyne, whose regular navigator Chris O’Neal is replaced in the Suzuki Jimny for this event by young Austin Barber. The grandson of navigational rallying stalwart ‘Biddy’ Barber, who passed away earlier this month, Austin was the winner of Class B in this year’s Chefette June Safari when he and Charles Clarke became the youngest crew to participate in the discipline for decades.
Alleyne’s strongest challenger this season has been Simon Parravicino, second in April and June in his Jeep Wrangler with navigator Andrew Croney. There is additional interest at the front of the field on Sunday with the return for the first time since March of Ben Norris and Kirk Watkins in their Jeep Rubicon, winners of the 2022 September Safari in conditions very similar to those currently prevailing.
With increased entry numbers, Class B promises to be hard-fought. Charles Clarke leads the driver’s championship in his Mitsubishi Pajero; thanks to his strong showing in June, he overhauled George Mendes (Suzuki Vitara), who had won the first two rounds, but his lead is only two points. Third, another 10 points adrift, is Clarke’s sister Rebecca (Mitsubishi Pajero iO), while the navigator standings are led by Leslie Evanson, who competes with Mendes.
Route-setters for the season’s penultimate Safari are Ben and Stephen Moore, the son and father team who won last year’s Class B Championship. The first crew will set out on Route 1 at 8.00am on Sunday from the premises of event sponsor KG Enterprises in Belle Plantation Yard, St Michael, heading through St George and into St Thomas, where the Driver Challenges will run during the lunch halt at the Vaucluse Raceway (VRW).
The restart is scheduled for 12.30pm, with Route 2 taking the crews north into St Andrew and St Joseph, before returning through St George to the finish back at VRW at around 4.00pm, bringing the total distance for the day to around 110 kilometres.
The results of the Super S September MudDogs Safari will be declared at the Prizegiving which starts at 7.00pm next Tuesday (September 17) at Savvy on the Bay.
