MUDDOGS BACK IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND
After a three-month summer break, competitors will be ready for action when the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Chefette MudDogs Safari & Safari Novice Championships continue on Sunday (September 18) with the third of four rounds in the 2016 calendar, the Chefette September Safari.
Winners of the March Safari and current points leaders, Leslie Alleyne and Chris O’Neal will start at number one in the Simpson Motors/Shell Spirax/Shell Rimula/Maxxis Isuzu D-Max. Alleyne and O’Neal lead the Driver and Navigator standings respectively by just four points from Michael Ward and Warrick Eastmond, who joined the roll of honour of the BRC’s longest-running event with victory on this year’s Sol June Safari in the Regional Fire & Security Suzuki Jimny.
While Ward and Eastmond beat them on the ground in June, Sunday will present a somewhat different challenge, as the June winners are the route-setters for this event. And Alleyne and O’Neal will also face a stiff challenge from a quality field, including proven winners such as Chris Armstrong and Wayne Clarke (Toyota Hilux), who finished second in June, and Robert and Ian Warren (Land Rover Defender), who returned to active competition in the last event.
Sunday’s Chefette September Safari will feature two routes, the first crew scheduled to leave the start at Chefette Speightstown, St Peter, at 8.00am. The lunch halt will be at Chefette Charles Rowe Bridge, St George, at approximately 12.00pm, with the finish at Chefette Six Roads, St Philip at around 5.00pm. There will be two Driver Challenges, both in the afternoon route, and very close to one another – the first is scheduled for 2.00pm by the Armag Vegetable Depot in St Philip, the second at around 4.30pm at Hampton on the opposite side of the road.
MudDogs Chairman Ricky Holder said: “I must again thank Chefette Restaurants for sponsoring this weekend’s event, as well as the overall championship. We certainly look forward to visiting three of their locations during the day.
“I am glad to see that we have Driver Challenges planned, as we missed them in The June, when everything had been so dry. We are all set for a challenging event, although the route-setters say that they have experienced some problems, with the grass growing so quickly recently and making some tracks hard to find.”
