SUMMER NIGHTS TARMAC STAGES ON SATURDAY

All the star players in the battle for the prestigious title Champion Driver in the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Virgin Atlantic Championship are in action this weekend. Nearly 30 crews are listed on the provisional running order for the BRC Summer Nights Tarmac Stages, which runs off on Saturday, August 11.

The seventh of 10 rounds, it comes at a crucial time in the Club’s 2012 calendar, with only a handful of points spread across the leading contenders; only two of the top 10 are missing for what promises to be an evening of action and entertainment.

In the current standings, Modified 7 leader Daryl Clarke (Honda Civic) has the advantage, with a total of 108 points, five ahead of Neil Corbin (Toyota Starlet) and Geoff Noel (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX), the leaders of M6 and Production 4 respectively, who are tied for second, with SuperModified 11 leader Logan Watson (BMW M3) a further three points behind in fourth.

Paul Bourne (Ford Focus WRC07) leads the four-wheel-drive title chase, six points ahead of Sean Gill – the Suzuki SX4 WRC is absent this weekend - with Noel and Roger Skeete (Subaru Impreza WRC S12) third and fourth, while the two-wheel-drive points are even closer: Neil Armstrong (Starlet) and Watson each have 75 points, with Clarke third, ahead of early leader Stuart Maloney (Peugeot 306 Maxi), another not competing this weekend.

Saturday’s event is slated for a 6.00pm start following Scrutineering at 4.00pm in the service park at St Lucy’s Churchyard. BRC Competition Secretary Neil Corbin outlines the event: “The first stage will start at Hope Road and make the right on to the main road, pass Northern Lumber Company, where there will be a chicane, and continue to towards the Pickering hairpin and finish in the usual place before the houses at Cottage.

“There is a possibility of rain but, even without it, there will be plenty action and entertainment for this night event.”

There are six runs in all with the stage being run in the reverse direction after the dinner break, which is expected to last around 45 minutes following the first three runs. The BRC Summer Nights Tarmac Stages should finish no later than 10.30pm.
