RALLY CLUB CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Seventy members of the island’s motor sport fraternity were honoured at the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) Annual Prizegiving on Saturday evening (November 20); awards included return tickets to the UK and all-inclusive ‘staycation’ weekends at the Sea Breeze Beach Hotel, presented by Beverley Layne, marketing co-ordinator of Virgin Atlantic, title sponsor of the BRC Driver’s and Class Championships.

Club officials, meanwhile, celebrated an unexpectedly successful season. In his address, BRC Chairman Geoff Noel said: “This has been without a doubt one of our best years; considering that it was during a world-wide depression, that says a lot for our Club and its members.” PRO Neil Barnard added: “This year, we had 250 different competitors in Club events and 400 paid-up memberships . . . something any club in any sport could be proud of.”

Among the evening’s awardees were marshals, whose voluntary commitment to the sport was praised by Noel, Barnard and Mud Dogs Chairman Leslie Alleyne. The contribution of long-standing marshals David Carter, David Cumberbatch, Ricardo Patrick and Timothy Wells was acknowledged with trophies, while another eight volunteers were rewarded in outstanding and rookie marshal categories.

Roger Hill and Graham Gittens were crowned Virgin Atlantic BRC Driver’s Champions, while Barry Gale and Cherie Edghill collected the awards as Overall Class Champions. In the Mud Dogs Safari Championship, Ryan Corbin claimed the Sextant Challenge Trophy as Champion Navigator and Dustin Edwards the Peter Farmer Memorial Trophy as Champion Driver, while Omar Boodhoo and Jamal Brathwaite were joint winners of the Autocross Championship.
